Dog Days

You’d think the dog days of summer would be long past us, now that the end of October is approaching. You’d have to live in a different climate, of course: We didn’t put away our shorts until last week. Until that point, it could still be hot enough to be uncomfortable without them.

And while some people might think the change of temperature is itself cause enough for celebration, that’s not what we’re up to. Acorn — the boy who loved dogs so much we brought one home when he was barely three, the boy who sometimes corrects you if you call him by name: “Baby Doggy,” he says solemnly, and the conversation cannot move on until the error is corrected — is a dog this year for Halloween.

Tonight was the first outing of the costume, to his preschool’s carnival. Tomorrow brings a full day in the costume at his preschool; a class party (which I will miss unless my meeting lets out early); trick-or-treating; and a birthday for Acorn’s classmate.

This Mommy-made costume is going to see a lot of wear. I’m glad it’s sturdy, particularly since he put it through its paces by crawling (like a doggy, of course) all over the front lawn this evening.

The above is the only blog-safe photo that turned out well. I’m nominally entering it in the Best Handmade Costume category, the only one it seems to fit.
